Less Than Stone

Cinematic Ambient for a World That Does Not Need Your Name

· 6:58

The stone has no record of your name: this is ambient music built in the presence of something older than sorrow. The stratified mesas at dusk, their silhouettes cut against the dying sky like facts that were always true: patient, indifferent, vast. You stand at the foot of the lowest tier and something in you sets down what it has been carrying. Not resolved, just no longer the measure. The wound-bearers who find this track will know: there is a kind of smallness that does not diminish you. When the scale is geological, you are released from having to be large.

A slow three-note motif climbs through the mesa tiers, ascending, arriving on each flat ledge, holding before the next step. A low sustain holds beneath: the stone's own frequency, already there when the first note began. The sound sweeps upward as the track builds toward a peak that is cold and vast, anonymous. No warm resolution follows; the close holds without warmth, the cold air and the last light. Headphones. The mesas remain.
