Before We Named It

Ancient Folk · The Wild That Looks Back

· 3:14

Ambient music for the ache of watching. Two fox cubs are playing in the tall grass, amber-eyed, dishevelled, ears turning at intervals toward a world they have not yet learned to fear. You are watching from a distance you did not choose, close enough to be moved, too far to ever belong to it. This is the oldest wound, and it does not announce itself as grief: it arrives as wonder. They are living, fully and without apology, the wild life we traded away.

And then the pause. Both cubs go still, the tall grass barely moving. Something has changed in the field and they do not know what, they only know to stop, to look out, to listen with their whole bodies. For one held moment the wild is total, and you are inside it with them. When the music returns it does not resolve into comfort; it settles with a kind of certainty, the way an animal owns the ground it stands on. Not sad. Sovereign. Still your eyes. Let them play.
